My Journey

Adi Adatiya

My name is Adi Adatiya, and I’m a high school student from Southern California who lives with endometriosis, a chronic condition that significantly impacts my daily life. I founded Teen Endo Unfiltered to provide an unfiltered glimpse into the reality of being a teenager grappling with constant pain while striving to meet the demands of school, sports, and everyday responsibilities.

My journey began abruptly at the age of fourteen, when I experienced severe back pain that was initially dismissed as a mere strain. This misdiagnosis triggered a frustrating and arduous process that spanned over a year, filled with countless doctor visits, invasive tests, and reassurances that nothing was seriously wrong with me. Despite the escalating intensity of my symptoms, which made routine activities increasingly difficult, I persevered. I continued to attend school, participate in competitive sports, and maintain a façade of normalcy, masking the pain that had become a constant in my life.

It wasn’t until much later that the possibility of endometriosis was brought up in a serious context, and I faced an agonizing wait for a formal diagnosis and the subsequent surgery that would follow. This experience of living with an invisible illness at such a young age has profoundly altered my perspective on healthcare, educational systems, and personal relationships.

Throughout this journey, I encountered medical gaslighting, where my symptoms were often minimized or attributed to psychological factors. I found myself navigating academic pressures while dealing with frequent absences caused by debilitating pain, leading to an overwhelming sense of needing to validate my suffering to those around me. I was forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to step away from a sport that had shaped my identity; it wasn’t a choice I made lightly, but rather a necessity dictated by my body’s inability to endure the physical demands of competition.

Simultaneously, my friendships evolved amidst the limitations imposed by my condition. Some relationships deepened, revealing those who genuinely supported me through challenging times, while others faded into the background, leaving me to confront the unpredictable nature of my health on my own.

I launched Teen Endo Unfiltered to cultivate a space grounded in honesty and authenticity, centered on real experiences rather than sensationalized narratives. This platform aims to support teens and young adults who are navigating the complexities of chronic pain, delayed diagnoses, and the struggle of being taken seriously by healthcare professionals, educators, and peers.

Moreover, I aspire to create a bridge of understanding for parents, teachers, and healthcare providers, illuminating the often invisible struggles of chronic illness in teenagers, and emphasizing the critical importance of listening and validating their experiences. By sharing my story, I do not aim to be merely inspirational; rather, I strive to offer accurate, informative, and practical insights that help others feel recognized, validated, and less isolated on their own health journeys.
